The Master of Arts in Education with a Specialization in Reading program offers a comprehensive degree that works to strengthen your instructional skills.
The program consists of 12 required courses (36 credit hours), allowing you to earn your degree in as little as 18 months. Sessions conveniently begin every eight weeks. You may even be able to transfer up to six semester hours from other regionally accredited universities.

EDUB 537 Diagnosis and Assessment in Reading Develops the ability to create, administer and interpret a wide variety of informal classroom assessments and standardized literacy assessments. Focuses on using assessments to screen, diagnose and plan remediation for students who are struggling with literacy development. Test administration and diagnosis with developmental and remedial students will be practiced, demonstrating the ethics of testing procedures and report preparation.
EDUB 541 Developmental and Remedial Materials and Resources in Reading Develops a foundation for literacy instruction through investigation of current philosophies and practices. Examines developmental and remedial materials, including basal programs, leveling systems, scope and sequence, and supplementary sources and materials. Guidelines for evaluating and selecting materials for classroom and small group use will be developed. Examines the characteristics of successful reading professionals and the resources they use.
EDUB 661 Literacy Development for English Language Learners Develops a better understanding of the developmental stages, skills, and processes of reading and writing acquisition for English Language Learners. Explores how the teaching of reading and writing in both the first and second language provides the foundation for the full development of academic language proficiency in various content areas such as science, social studies and math.
EDUB 754 Leadership and Coaching in Reading Enhances skills sets and the use of resources relating to literacy coaching at the P–12 levels. Skill sets include, but are not limited to, understanding applicability of existing theories, the use of best practices in literacy assessment, successful coaching and coaching in difficult situations.
SPEDB 656 Collaboration and Adaptation in General Education Settings Examines strategies necessary to integrate individuals with disabilities into general learning environments. Develops advanced skills for selecting appropriate strategies and materials based upon a better understanding of the learning environment, classroom demands and learning characteristics of the student. Focuses on modifying instructional methods, curricular materials and the environment; modification of state and local assessments; effective collaboration and co-teaching; and fostering positive interactions between students with and without disabilities.
EDUB 755 Reading Practicum In a real-world setting, students will assist, support, coach and evaluate teachers and paraprofessionals in their use of techniques such as: instructional grouping, appropriate curriculum materials and instructional reading acquisition practices. Professional study groups for paraprofessionals, educators and parents will be developed and conducted.
